Attendance
Teachers will take attendance in PowerSchool at the start of each instructional block, recording which students are present/tardy/absent for the day. Students are expected to be present and participate in each class at the correct time, following the school’s daily schedule. Once a student returns from an absence, missing work should be requested from each teacher.
DISMISSAL PRECAUTIONS
School personnel shall not release a student during the school day to any person not authorized by the student's parent/guardian to assume responsibility for the student. Students shall be released only by request and authorization of the parent or guardian listed in PowerSchool. The requesting party must provide legal documentation in order to receive the student. A formal check-out system shall be maintained in each Orange County Public School when a parent or guardian requests an early dismissal.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Students who are being dismissed early must receive a pass from the attendance office prior to checking out. Students expecting to be picked up should remain in class until they are called. Leaving school grounds without prior approval or properly checking out with the attendance office will result in disciplinary action.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
The parent/guardian has communicated, with supporting documentation if required, to school officials the reason for their child’s absence and school officials consider the reason valid. Excused absences include but are not limited to: student illness, death or serious illness of a family member, doctor, dentist or therapist appointments, pre-approved travel for family emergencies or vacation, subpoenas for court, and religious observances.
WORK COMPLETION DURING ABSENCES
The following guidelines shall be followed by the Administrator(s) when implementing School Board Policy JEDA for make-up work by students with excused absences, unexcused absences, and absences due to suspension.
- The student or parent/guardian is responsible for initiating contact with a school official to obtain make up work.
- Make up work due to excused or unexcused absence(s) shall receive full credit upon successful completion and submission of any/all assignments. Students will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete make-up work, generally one day for each day of absence.
- Pre-assigned work is due upon the student’s return to school, work received after the pre-assigned deadline may reflect a grade reduction.
- Performance-based classes and labs requiring written work reflecting the learning objectives may be substituted for the original assignment.
- In-school suspension procedures for accessing make-up work will be obtained associated
- Students are expected to turn in work on time. Late work will be accepted by the teacher in accordance with the current three-week learning cycle, except in extenuating circumstances--illness, death, other excused absence, etc. Late work will receive reduced credit. Work from more than one previous learning cycle will not be accepted.
TARDINESS
1st Block Tardies:
- Students should check in with the attendance clerk if they have an EXCUSED TARDY to receive a tardy pass to class.
- 1st block begins promptly at 7:25, and students should be in their seats at this time. Students arriving at 7:25 am are late to school and an unexcused tardy will be recorded.
2nd-4th Block Tardies:
- Students who are more than 10 minutes late to class, without a pass, are considered skipping and will receive an office referral.
- Students arriving to class without a pass, after the tardy bell, will be assigned a tardy unexcused.
- Tardies are tracked by class and teacher.

Medications
Because of the dangers of misuse of medications, the administration of medications during school hours is discouraged. If this is not possible, school officials will cooperate in the administration of medication that must be given during school hours. Medications will be administered according to the written order(s) of a physician or licensed nurse practitioner. This order must contain the name of the medication, the dosage to be administered, the times to be administered and the duration of the order. No herbal products will be administered at school. No medications will be administered above the suggested dosage guidelines. Children with inhalers need a completed medication order. If a student is to carry the inhalers with him/her, it should state so on the form. Students may take medications at school only under the supervision of the school nurse or main office personnel. Any medication (prescription or non-prescription) must be brought to school by an adult. Students cannot transport medications to and from school.
One student may not give any medication to another student. This can be dangerous, and for some medications can be a serious violation of the law. A medical form will be given to your child to bring home the first day of school, along with the other forms and information.
Again, please follow these simple safety rules below:
-
Medications must be brought to the nurse’s office by the parent or guardian;
-
They must be accompanied by specific written directions;
-
They must be in the original labeled container;
-
They must be kept in the locked medicine drawer/cabinet in the nurse’s office; and
-
They must be dispensed by school personnel.
Emergency Information
We need emergency information in case of student illness or injury during the school day. Students’ addresses and telephone numbers should be kept current so that we may reach the appropriate person quickly if an emergency situation occurs.

Volunteer
The Orange County School Board supports and encourages the active participation of parents and members of the community in providing and extending educational opportunities for children. The involvement of parents, volunteers and others in the community who can serve as a resource to schools is a fundamentally important component of successful school programs.
Thank you so much for your consideration. We are so appreciative of the continued support from our community.
